Hallelujah! As of yesterday, November 1st, the Conservatives have destroyed all the records of the Canadian long gun registry, other than Quebec's due to the outstanding court challenge in that province.

Long-gun registry finally shot down

Now that the millions of records on registered long guns have finally been destroyed -- with the exception of those court-protected files from Quebec -- allow us to speak to the stubbornly ignorant.

Handguns in Canada must still be registered. Repeat: handguns in Canada must still be registered.

This has never changed. Now, after that sinks in, kindly advise your neighbourhood gangbangers of their lawful duty to comply with legislation that has existed since 1934.

Let's be blunt. The destruction of the long-gun registry this week by the Harper Conservatives finally brings an end to an ugly political chapter in which the Liberals of Prime Minister Jean Chretien had demonized law-abiding long-gun owners in Canada.

He made hunters and farmers feel like criminals, and they're not.

They don't get into shootouts with rival hunters and farmers. They don't protect their turf with drive-by shootings.

They don't sell drugs, or shoot innocent bystanders in public malls, and nor have they been on any Most Wanted list unless your plumber happens to be on a hunting trip when a pipe bursts.

They are the law-abiders, not the law-breakers.

It is a rarity in politics for governments to actually keep their promises, but Prime Minister Stephen Harper kept this one, using his 2011 majority to finally get the job done.

He deserves nothing but praise.

The Liberals have a penchant for billion-dollar boondoggles. The HRDC scandal cost taxpayers a billion, to cite but one, and so did the national long-gun registry that did nothing to protect the public but everything to tar the image of a Canadian heritage that annually puts tens of millions into government coffers.

As Andrew McGrath, a spokesman for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told Sun Media, "We are making our streets and communities safer by targeting criminals who use firearms, not law-abiding Canadians.

"Make no mistake, the tax-and-spend NDP will not hesitate to bring back the long-gun registry. Now that this information has been deleted, it can never be recovered -- even by NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair."

Perhaps there will finally be joy in the deer-hunt camps now that this bad law has been shot down for good.

Bill C-19?

Put a tag on it.
