I've been out a few times to the east with a similar story. Couple wing beat, couple fluff and feather piles along roads.
I have not seen as many magpie and jays per trip as usual, but not exactly science.
I wouldn't mind if we had even a part time upland bird specialist. When they weren't letting gov know that there is a dollar to be made in having more than just goose hunters in fields they could pass out a few blood test strips to see how bad, or not, West Nile is in local grouse pop, east and west.
Sharptails Plus may have information like this. Reach out to them via their website and speak with Terry.

I don't think sharptails plus is active. There web site and Facebook page hasn't been updated for a while.
If you want any decent info try the North Dakota Game and Fish page on YouTube. They have a decent vid on grouse numbers in their state. It may not be for manitoba but some comparisons can be made.

I can tell you they're still active ... I texted Terry earlier this year in the spring to ask what they're seeing in regards to population numbers.

Nice to hear that they are still active,
Do you know if they are they doing lek counts or habitat restoration, or ...?

From what I've seen, the numbers of sharptails have never been this good.
Hungarian partridge numbers are looking good too.
Ruffies are not..

Also a good source of info is the
" Birtle Transmission Project
Sharptail grouse Lek site survey 2020"
Google it.
I'd post a link but I can't seem to.
I'd like to head out that way for a little hunting, anyone here ever hunted the
Spy Hill - Ellice community pasture?
Cheers 🍻

Ok, do you know if they plan on publishing the results of the surveys? or what kind of habitat programs (habitat enhancement/ restoration, controlled burns...ect ) on the site?
Im not interested in locations but some raw data would be helpful .

Sorry, I don't know the answer to that. You'll need to reach out to Terry and the folks at S+

I'm going out shooting with Terry tomorrow, and I'll ask about publishing their data. I don't think much was done recently due to Covid restrictions

Templar loves chasing Canada's but they're a little out of his wheel-house to retrieve. He runs out and stands over them till I get there (and is a big help on runners).
Terry said that due to Covid little was done last 2 summers so there is no report forthcoming. However there is new funding available from the province and hopefully a study can be undertaken next year.
